Since its inception in 1962, the Outdoor Writers of Kansas (OWK) has been a voice for the Sunflower State's many outdoor-recreation opportunities. From a newspaper article highlighting the appeal of hunting pheasants in the state's wide-open spaces to a radio show broadcast straight from the fishing boat, members have kept Kansas residents in touch with the outdoors for more than 40 years now. OWK members cover the outdoors from a variety of angles. Membership includes newspaper and magazine writers, photographers, editors, government employees, tourism officials and even a cartoonist. Membership has always been small - 30 to 35 members. But the organization is big in stature. Members of the group regularly win awards in national writing and photography contests. OWK meets twice a year. Information gathered during associated hunting and fishing trips result in articles, videos and radio shows that highlight different locations throughout the state. An annual auction and raffle raises funds for one of OWK's main missions: to send underprivileged children to Outdoors Adventure Camp each year.
